Finding Places to Boondock

Finding a good place to boondock depends on several factors, but the most important factor is your SAFETY. You should never boondock in a place that doesn't feel or look right.....if there is gang tags on the walls nearby, this probably isn't a safe place! So, as we discuss finding places to boondock, always keep safety and your personal security in mind.

PARKING LOTS
Wal Mart, K Mart, Cracker Barrel, Flying J and other truck stops have traditionally been favorite places to spend a night. Also, church / restaurant / hospital parking lots are also good alternatives. ALWAYS check with the owner or management to make sure that it is OK to boondock. Explain that you are self-contained and advise when you will be leaving.

FEDERAL LAND
Most federal lands have areas where you are allowed to boondock. Most are free, but some charge small fees. Check with your local BLM, NFS, COE or NPS office for locations. There are several books that you can purchase at camping stores that list boondock sites.

ELKS
Many Elks lodges have campgrounds with at least some hookups where you can stay for a nominal charge or boondock. However, this is limited to Elks members.

ESCAPEES
The Escapees Club has excellent information on boondock sites around the US and Canada. They have a column in their magazine called "Days End" that lists boondock sites submitted by Escapee members. Escapee members can also purchase an up-to-date list of all the Days End listings for a nominal fee. There is also an informal group of Escapee boondockers that publish a bi-monthly newsletter and plan boondock get-togethers.

INTERNET
Search the Internet for boondock sites. One of the best sites for finding campgrounds in the western portion of the US is at Free Camprounds of the West.

OTHER PLACES
Ask the local police for a safe place to park. Sometimes, they will let you boondock close to the police station and also patrol your location. Check with a local farmer or rancher and ask if you can stay in one of their fields for a couple of dollars. Oftentimes, this is money that is much appreciated, and you may even make a new friend.

DRIVEWAY BOONDOCKING
Escapees, Good Sams and DOAI list members that will allow you to boondock, either in their driveway on their property. Sometimes, they are even able to provide hookups.
