Fred Wihte's Computer Table Modification

I use my laptop quite regularly both on the road and when spending the winter in Florida. Accordingly, I wanted to replace the OEM table behind the passenger’s seat with one better suited to my needs.

The standard OEM table supplied with my unit folded flush against the coach sidewall and didn’t have any bookshelves. I removed the standard table and built a book shelf unit using oak 1 x 6 (which gives 5 ½" deep bookshelves. Part of the shelves house books and part of the space was set aside for a power strip for the laptop needs. BTW, red oak stained with Minwax No. 235 Cherry stain is a good match for the stain used on the D, although the oak will show a little more grain than the alder used in the D. I’ve also used aspen stained with the same stain, and it’s a very good match in color and grain, but a little softer wood than oak.

Next I made a table, which holds the laptop and has a hinged top and sliding tray for access to the laptop. The two enclosed photos show the table closed and open. You can also see bookcase. The "box" under the table holds a USB Zip drive and a USB CD Rom burner drive. The drive box can be removed with one wing nut to take into the house when I get back to RI for the summer months. The drive box has a simple power plug in it and also a 4 port USB hub so connecting to the laptop is real simple – plug in the power plug to 110 AC (in the bookcase) and connect one USB cable to the laptop.

The following photo shows the table open. The tray is mounted on a standard double extension drawer slide from Home Depot.
