Kwikee steps are normally very reliable, but there are a few things to check if your steps don't work.
The most common problem is that the magnetic door sensor has become dislodged. The sensor is located on the door frame, near the bottom left as you are entering the coach. It is a good idea to check this first if you are having a problem.
The second leading cause of step failure is lack of properly lubricating the steps. Here is a neat tip from Ed Kennedy to help you lube your steps:
A Kwikee rep at the Richmond rally taught me a couple of things that have made maintaining the steps much easier. The step controller senses the current draw of the motor. When the motor draw hits 8 amps, the controller shuts off the motor and reverses the direction of motor rotation. So the next time the controller gets a signal (from the step switch or the ignition), the step does the opposite of what it did the last time. So if your step hits a curb on the way out - it just stops and then waits for the next signal to retract. When the step retracts, it doesn't jam itself in all the way, it cuts off when the motor current hits 8 amps.
To lube the steps: Just use your arms or feet to stop the step halfway out, then reach in and remove the cotter pin from the actuator arm. Then you can move the steps back and forth manually to clean and lube them. Then hook the cotter pin back up. The step in the halfway position is easy to work on because the linkages are not under a final load. Use WD-40 to clean the step hinges and linkages, and then "KwikLube", the Kwikee grease lube in a spray can to lube everything. Once or twice a year and your steps will never freeze up.
